July 10th 2003 saw the inauguration of the first mosque to be built in Granada's Albaicin district in over 500 years. A group of Spanish Muslims, the "Fundación Mezquita de Granada" (Foundation for the Mosque of Granada), with the help of private citizens and government support from Libya, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Morocco raised the 4 million Euro construction cost. They did not find their dream an easy one to make true. 20 years of bureaucratic and financial problems encumbered their efforts to make their own Islamic center in the heart of the gone but not forgotten "Al-Andaluz" (Andalusia) where Muslims ruled until 1492. With one of the most privileged views of Islam's own "Qasr Al-Hamra" (the Red Fortress), the monument Christians call The Alhambra, the Great Mosque of Granada is now, once again, a reality. BACK
